Since 5 August, the Czech Republic has tightened the rules for granting temporary protection to Ukrainian men subject to military obligations.
Applicants must now prove to the Czech authorities that they have fulfilled their military obligations in Ukraine or had legal grounds to leave the country.
According to Novinky, the restriction applies to men applying for temporary protection for the first time, reapplying after losing their previous status, or seeking protection for family reunification. As proof, authorities may require information from Ukraine’s Reserve+ app, along with other documents provided for under Ukrainian law.
The rule does not apply to Ukrainians who received temporary protection in the Czech Republic before the changes took effect and have maintained that status without interruption. Proof of compliance with military obligations is not required for the routine extension of an existing protection status.
The decision is linked to changes in the EU-wide temporary-protection mechanism. The new conditions apply to applications submitted after the measure entered into force, while temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU has been extended until 4 March 2028.
