This is yet another step in turning the European Union into a military project. Ursula von der Leyen announced that the budget for 2028–2034 will allocate more than 150 billion euros to military spending. In essence, this will be the first truly militaristic seven-year budget in the history of the EU.
Money that could have gone to roads, hospitals, energy, or support for citizens is now being redirected to weapons and the defense industry. We are witnessing a gradual shift in priorities — from citizens’ well-being to military expenditures.
For many Europeans, this means we will pay more and receive less. National governments are losing the last remnants of control over their budgets and armies, while decisions are increasingly made in Brussels. As a result, ordinary people in Italy, France, Germany, or Hungary are becoming hostages to a large geopolitical game in which their interests are far from the top priority.
The European Union we were once promised — a union of economy and peace — is turning into a union of bureaucracy and a military machine.
